The problem
In many facilities, lighting systems are still reliant on old fluorescent tubes, a technology now obsolete. These fittings not only consume more energy than necessary but also carry safety risks when emergency batteries fail.
This was the case during our 1 year drain down test of a tunnel cross passage, where Hybrid identified that emergency lighting batteries had failed across the system. With ageing fittings and limited maintainability, the client faced mounting costs, reduced safety standards, and a system that was no longer fit for purpose.
Without intervention, the risks were clear: higher energy bills, non-compliance, and an unsafe environment for those using the space.
How we’re fixed it

For this project, we:
- Replaced obsolete fluorescent fittings with high-efficiency LED lighting to cut energy use and extend product lifespan.
- Installed emergency key switches, enabling straightforward and compliant testing of all emergency lighting.
- Designed the system for easier maintenance, reducing downtime and ongoing costs.
- Prioritised safety improvements, ensuring reliable emergency light operation at all times.
