There’s often quite a lot of confusion between HVAC and cooling systems, so we thought we’d clear it up once and for all.

While both are crucial at keeping homes and workplaces comfortable, they do actually serve different purposes and work in distinct ways. We talk you through the real difference between the two.

What are HVAC systems and what does HVAC stand for?

In short, HVAC is an acronym that stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. It’s a multipurpose system that heats and cools properties, as well as improves air quality and controls humidity.

What is air con?

Air con, also known as a cooling system or AC, is often part of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. It works by removing heat and humidity from indoor air to create a more comfortable temperature.

So, what’s the difference?

Ultimately, a cool system (AC unit) only cools the air, whereas a HVAC system has more than one function. It ventilates, heats, and cools. This makes HVAC systems more versatile and suitable for year-round climate control, while standalone AC units are best for spaces that only require cooling.
